TotalEnergies Secures France’s Largest Offshore Wind Project to Power Over 1 Million Homes

TotalEnergies to Lead France’s Largest-Ever Renewable Energy Project
French energy leader TotalEnergies has announced that it has won the Centre Manche 2 (AO8) offshore wind tender, securing rights to design, develop, build, and operate what will become the largest renewable energy project in France. The project was initially won in partnership with RWE, but following RWE’s exit from the consortium, TotalEnergies will move forward independently while seeking a new partner.A 1.5 GW Offshore Wind Farm in Normandy
Planned more than 40 kilometers off the coast of Normandy, the offshore wind farm will have a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW). Once operational, it is expected to supply clean electricity to the equivalent of over 1 million households in France. Annual production is estimated at 6 TWh, sold at a price of €66/MWh as set by the tender.Investment and Economic Impact
The project represents a €4.5 billion investment and is anticipated to employ up to 2,500 people during its three-year construction phase. According to TotalEnergies, a final investment decision is expected by early 2029, with the wind farm projected to begin electricity generation by 2033.Commitment to Sustainability and Biodiversity
As part of its environmental commitments, TotalEnergies will allocate €45 million to measures aimed at avoiding, reducing, and offsetting project impacts, along with €15 million dedicated to a biodiversity promotion fund in Normandy. The company has also pledged to ensure high recycling standards for the project’s materials, targeting at least 95% recycling, reuse, or repurposing rates for blades, towers, and nacelles, with 100% of generator magnets recycled or reused.
