ACWA Power and Syrian Ministry of Energy Explore Renewable Energy Development

The Syrian Ministry of Energy and ACWA Power have signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to explore up to 2.5GW of renewable energy projects, marking a significant step in Syria’s energy transition.

Scope of the Agreement

The JDA outlines the development of: - 1GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity - 1.5GW of wind energy projects - Energy storage solutions to strengthen grid adaptability - A national technical training centre to build a skilled local workforce The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Energy’s headquarters, was attended by Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir, ACWA Power founder and chair Mohammad Abunayyan, and senior delegates.

Focus on Grid Modernisation and Talent Development

The agreement includes a comprehensive review of Syria’s existing power infrastructure and national grid capacity. ACWA Power will collaborate with the ministry to identify optimal project locations and prioritise rehabilitation of existing assets.

Moayad Samman, ACWA Power’s country general manager for Syria, commented:

“Today’s agreement in Syria sets a clear pathway to bring best-in-class solutions to the Syrian power sector – solutions that combine reliable generation, cost competitiveness, and accelerated renewable energy integration.”

Samman added that the initiative will not only deliver new capacity but also foster job creation through the training centre, ensuring local talent plays a central role in the sector’s growth.

Strengthening Syria’s Energy Future

With this collaboration, ACWA Power and the Syrian Ministry of Energy aim to: - Accelerate the integration of renewables into Syria’s grid - Enhance energy security and reliability - Build a foundation for long-term workforce development

By combining solar, wind, and storage, the agreement signals a shift toward a more sustainable and resilient energy system for the country.
