A Nordic Alliance for the Battery Future
Sweden and Norway are taking a major step toward sustainable mobility with a new cross-border collaboration on electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling. Mobility Sweden and Norway’s Bilimportørenes Landsforening have signed a strategic agreement to meet the European Union’s upcoming battery regulation requirements, aiming to secure a cleaner and more resource-efficient future for the automotive sector.
Building a Coordinated Return System
Through their subsidiaries — Swedish FoRetur and Norwegian Autoretur Battery Recycling — the organizations will establish a joint return system designed to handle used EV batteries in line with future regulations. The partnership begins this August with parallel tender processes to select treatment operators in both countries, ensuring readiness ahead of the EU’s regulatory deadlines.
Efficiency and Environmental Gains
The initiative is built around four main priorities: sharing expertise and best practices, laying the foundation for a circular battery economy, maximizing environmental benefits through economies of scale, and working closely with authorities to create harmonized requirements and reporting systems. Together, the countries aim to set a standard for sustainable battery handling in Europe.
Driving the Circular Economy Forward
By aligning their efforts, Sweden and Norway are positioning themselves at the forefront of circular battery management in the EV sector. The collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships in achieving ambitious sustainability targets, while creating an efficient system that benefits manufacturers, consumers, and the environment alike.
